Interviews The connection with nature You can't always escape tradition. Her grandmother passed down the traditional knowledge of local medicinal herbs, as Raluca tells. Today, she combines this ancient knowledge with modern scientific expertise to produce cosmetics and medicines. Her ingredients come from the garden and the surrounding wood-pastures. A central topic in all of this is the connection with nature. Raluca explains that we are all part of our ecosystems. And so even people in urban areas should not lose this connection. Against time Tibor Hartel shows an extraordinary landscape near Valea Seacă in Romania. He highlights the charakteristics and values of the landscape and explains why people and their traditions are so indispensable in sustaining them. The gold of the wood-pastures Forester Tibor Kádár-Sándor talks about the inestimable value of the acorns found in the wood pastures. Not solely for the shepherds and sheep that roam the pastures, or the families that live near these woodlands. These little acorns store, through genetic adaptation, the resilience to weather and climate extremes to which these trees have been exposed for hundreds of years. And thus the potential for reforestation of damaged sites and for a sustainable landscape development. A silent dialogue with nature Nature photographer Imola Barabás provides insights into her deep connection to the landscape, animals and plants that she captures with her camera. What is a hobby for many is a lifestyle for her - a silent dialogue with nature. Her pictures tell stories of biodiversity, of moments that cannot be found in books, and of the delicate balance that holds our ecosystems together. Giving a voice to the communities Viktoria Luft explains the work of the federation 'Peisaj Deschis' (open landscape). László also highlights the importance of deadwood in the pastures. Preserving wood-pastures How do we preserve the wood-pastures in Romania? Dietmar Gross from Viscri knows better than most people in Transylvania what can be achieved in his own village, in the community and by combining knowledge from practice and science. He and his village community demonstrate the natural connection between the village and the landscape: in addition to sustainable grazing, the management of their own wood-pasture also includes the rejuvenation and re-establishment of the typical oak trees, which began in 2023. The village with its grazing community thus creates new values, maintains them through management and thus generates local added value for the businesses in the village. This sustainable cultural landscape development is based on the social, economic and ecological values of the village community. Bățanii Mari - a region between tradition and transformation László Bocskor shows us the pasture landscape around his village of Bățanii Mari / Nagybacon in Covasna County, Transylvania. In the small village, 60 km north of the city of Brașov, there is an intact dairy cooperative of regional farmers and many shepherds who use their traditional know-how to protect the herds from wild animals. As László Bocskor emphasizes, the continuation of this intact organic farming is also a generational issue and the appreciation of the landscape in a market economy.
