Results of the Transylvanian wood-pastures project presented at international LIFE conference

LIFE Platform Meeting on “LIFE and European Forest Restoration” in Brasov, Romania, from 3 to 5 June 2025

With around 100 experts from 13 countries representing 33 LIFE, Horizon and Interreg projects, the event brought together an inspiring community of forestry, agroforestry, nature conservation and climate protection experts from across Europe.

The wood-pasture project was presented in two lectures. First in the plenary session as a keynote speech to inspire the working groups: Silvo-pastoral systems and agroforestry: ‘Revitalising silvo-pastoral and agroforestry systems for biodiversity and sustainability: a German-Romanian perspective’, Jacob Bussmann and Frank Wagener. And then in Working Group III ‘European Forests: Silvo-pastoral Systems and Agroforestry & Ecological Restoration’. Here, László Rákosy and Frank Wagener highlighted the uniqueness of the wood-pastures in Transylvania and their extraordinary importance for the whole of Europe.

Many good discussions and new contacts demonstrated the great interest in the results of the wood-pastures project and their significance for the careful development of the cultural landscape in Romania. The second focus was on the connection between old and new knowledge. The various projects were used to illustrate how old farming systems and their position in cultural landscape development were analysed, how this provided insights for the development of new farming systems, and how this knowledge was linked to current technical and economic requirements.
