Viscri wood-pasture
Description
Situated near the village of Viscri – Weiskirch – Szászfejéregyháza, this wood-pasture has several current characteristics which points towards an ecologically and socio-culturally sustainable management. First, the wood-pasture still contains ancient oaks (Quercus robur, Q. petraea), hollwing, dead trees, scattered shrubs with tree regeneration and wetlands. Second, the wood-pasture is not managed with modern technolgies and agrochemicals are not used to increase its productivity. Thirdly and uniquely, the stewardship of this wood-pasture is still communal, through a farmer association built for this purpose. Elements of traditional communal pasture management are combined with modern ecological needs and values within the current management system. Currently there are over 200 cattle grazing this wood-pasture. Easily accessible from the village.
