In a two-hour presentation, he presented the results of more than five projects, demonstrating how traditional and modern knowledge intertwine to create new cultural systems in agroforestry. This is where tradition meets the future: he covered everything from the cultural-historical background to state-of-the-art analyses of water drainage and water retention systems. Drought and heavy rainfall are extreme weather events that are occurring with increasing frequency and intensity in Europe. Trees and shrubs in agroforestry offer a way to mitigate these effects and reduce risks.

The Romanian research focus covered 110 wood-pastures in Transylvania, i.e. traditional, in some cases very old agroforests. Ancient oaks on cattle pastures provide genetically unique material with their seeds, which offers insights into the evolutionary behaviour and adaptability of the trees. These results are incorporated into modern cultivation systems and provide knowledge about many trees in the context of climate change, e.g. where certain trees will thrive in the future and where their natural habitats will shift. As the climate gets warmer, the atmosphere’s water demand increases, causing the soil to become drier and forcing trees to cope with less water and, during heavy rainfall events, with far too much water. In many locations, these extreme weather events occur one after the other. This requires modern solutions based on agroforestry.

The slides for the presentation are available here.

Further projects:
https://afaktive.stoffstrom.org/
https://agroflow.stoffstrom.org/
https://agroforst-info.de/modema/

Photos: Dr. Gerd Kautz

Around 70 guests gathered at the National Park Academy on 23 February at the Birkenfeld Environmental Campus.
